Case Study: Ravi

Ravi is a retired teacher. He lives alone in a detached property in an affluent area. He has physical health issues and suffers from memory loss. His wife passed away two years ago, and he has no children.

Ravi is a victim of cuckooing to facilitate financial exploitation.

A young couple befriended Ravi at a ‘coffee and cake’ morning organised by his local church. They offered to buy him groceries and to mow his front lawn. Having built trust and dependence over time, the couple now live in Ravi’s home, drive his car, and are stealing money from his bank account. Ravi believes that the couple are his carers and is grateful for their help and companionship.

The warning signs of cuckooing for financial exploitation can be subtle. Were you able to identify them in Ravi’s case?
